Do you work in a “paperless office”? That’s when a company reduces its paper use to cut down on costs while also helping the environment. A small software company in the Netherlands just took the concept one step further.

The Noordwijk-based Decos Technology Group is determined to make its offices truly paper-free. Over the past few years, they’ve phased out photocopy paper, Post-It Notes, and even wastepaper baskets. iPads have replaced paper in meetings and all of their record keeping and invoicing is done digitally. The final step in their plan was obviously the most challenging one: a few weeks ago, they did away with toilet paper.

Management discovered a solution when they heard about the AquaClean, a futuristic “shower toilet” designed by a European fixtures company called Geberit. Essentially a high-tech, high-pressure bidet, the AquaClean limits the need for wiping tissue, equipped with a water sprayer and a built-in drier along with a heated seat. Users can control the strength of the sprayer’s stream as well.

“It started out as a joke,” Decos spokeswoman Marcia van Kampen told a Dutch newspaper. “This toilet is more hygienic and better for the environment. My coworkers at the coffee machine have been positive about the switch,” van Kampen said.

Decos now prides itself as being the most paperless company in the Netherlands…and probably the world.
