6 Interesting Emmy Post-Game Stats

August 26, 2014

Pop culture is like sports for Uncle John, so here are some fun facts and figures from last night’s Emmy Awards.

  • Emmy StatuetteThere were absolutely no first-time winners in the major Comedy and Drama acting categories. Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Allison Janney (Mom), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), and Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) have all previously won Emmys.
  • In fact, some of those wins put their recipients on the all-time most-Emmyed list. Janney won for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, and also won a Best Guest Actress Award for Masters of Sex. Having previously won four times for her work on The West Wing, Janney now has six Emmys.
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus picked up her fifth Emmy, and third consecutive Best Actress in a Comedy award, for Veep. She is the only actress in history to win an Emmy for three different shows (she previously won for Seinfeld and The New Adventures of Old Christine).
  • Parsons’ fourth trophy for The Big Bang Theory puts him in a four-way tie for most Best Actor in a Comedy wins. He now ranks with TV legends Michael J. Fox (Family Ties, Spin City), Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), and Carroll O’Connor (All in the Family). Parsons also earned a nomination for the HBO made-for-TV movie The Normal Heart and recently signed a contract that will earn him around $1 million per episode of Big Bang, so he’s having a pretty good summer.
  • Bryan Cranston’s fourth Emmy for Breaking Bad ties him with Dennis Franz of NYPD Blue for most Emmy wins as a leading drama actor. And earlier this year he won a Tony for All the Way, so he’s having a pretty good summer, too.
  • And then there are the snubs. Jon Hamm has been nominated seven times for Mad Men. He has yet to win. Amy Poehler was nominated for her eleventh Emmy last night; she walked away empty-handed once again, too.
