PRPG:

Crazy Cartoon Crossovers

November 13, 2014

Two of the TV season’s biggest events have been “crossovers”—The Simpsons met the characters of Family Guy, and then the ones from Futurama. Both were relatively well received, but will they be forgotten like these other animated mash-ups?

Bewitched vs. The Flintstones (1965)

Cartoon CrossoversIn a 1965 episode of The Flintstones, Fred and Barney decide to go camping and leave Wilma and Betty behind, claiming that women can’t handle the outdoors. The wives later learn that they’re living in the same neighborhood as prehistoric version of Samantha and Darrin from Bewitched. Samantha decides to take them camping, too, and uses her magical powers to upstage their husbands at every turn.

Transformers vs. G.I. Joe (1987)

During an episode of Transformers that takes place in far off, futuristic year of 2006, a mysterious weapons dealer named Old Snake shows up to sell “synthoid technology” to a crime lord. The plan eventually falls apart and Old Snake manages to escape both the authorities and the Autobots. While the show never explicitly states that he’s Cobra Commander, the nefarious terrorist leader from G.I. Joe, there’s no escaping the fact that it’s him, two decades removed from his ‘80s heyday. The character wears CC’s iconic silver mask, his uniform can be seen under his trenchcoat, and he’s even voiced by the same actor. During the episode, Old Snake wistfully daydreams about his days as a powerful insurgent and even shouts his trademark “COBRA!” catchphrase before making his escape.

Hercules vs. Aladdin (1999)

In the 1990s, Disney would quickly turn its big-screen animated films into animated after-school cartoons. Among them: The Little Mermaid, Timon and Pumbaa (a spinoff of The Lion King), and Hercules: The Animated Series. In an episode of Hercules, Jafar (the villain from Disney’s Aladdin) places a bet with Hades (the Hercules nemesis), on which hero is the toughest. Jafar takes Hercules, and Hades goes for Aladdin; whoever defeats a hero first, wins the bet. They send monsters and demons after their adversaries but both fail. Then the duo attempt to pit Aladdin and Hercules against one another. Despite finding themselves in the middle of an epic battle, the heroes eventually figure out the conspiracy and use their respective talents to send their enemies back to the Underworld where they belong.
