6 Weird March Holidays You Ought to Celebrate

March 2, 2015

March HolidaysMarch comes in like a strange lion, and out like an odd lamb.

March 3: National Anthem Day

Francis Scott Key wrote the song shortly after a time during the War of 1812 in which he was held captive as a POW on a British ship. Key wrote it on Sept. 14, 1814, but March 3 is recognized because it became the National Anthem on March 3, 1931.

March 6: Dentist’s Day

Today is the day to recognize the good done by a profession that is among the most feared and maligned. Ways to celebrate: send a thank you card to your dentist, or finally start flossing every day.

March 6: National Frozen Food Day

On March 6, 1984, Congress declared the day National Frozen Food Day, per the lobbying of the frozen food industry. Celebrate the occasion with some frozen food (and then cook it, and eat it).

March 22: National Goof Off Day

What are you supposed to do on this day? As little as possible—watch TV, play video games, avoid chores, whatever suits you. The holiday was created by William Chase of Chase’s Calendar of Events, the founding document of silly holidays. While on a radio discussing silly celebrations in 1976, his 10-year-old granddaughter, Monica Dufour called in, and disguising her voice, suggested National Goof Off Day. It made the cut.

March 23: National Chip and Dip Day

While any day is a good day for chips and dip, the official day upon which you’re supposed to eat chips and dip is March 23 (and it’s been a long enough time since the Super Bowl, anyway).

March 26: Make Your Own Holiday Day

As if these other examples didn’t make it clear enough, anybody or any organization can make up their own holiday. This one, created by the Wellness Permission League, gives you full on permission to make up your own holiday, too. (But you can’t have March 26, because it’s taken.)
