  • Etimoni Timuani is a 100-meter runner from Tuvalu (as well as a former professional soccer player) is the Olympic delegation from Tuvalu—he’s the only representative of the tiny Island nation. However, with a population of 9,876, that gives Tuvalu a much higher rate of Olympians per capita than the U.S., which has a population of 320 million and sent 554 athletes.
  • Of those 554 Americans, one of them is the shortest of all athletes in Rio. Gymnast Simone Biles stands 4’8″ tall. And if she or any of her teammates are unable to compete, they’ve got an alternate: Ragan Smith: She’s 4’6″.
  • They know how to shoot in Bhutan. The Asian nation sent two women to the Olympics: an archer named Karma and an air rifle shooter named Lenchu Kunzang. Kunzang is the first athlete from Bhutan to ever compete in an Olympic event besides archery, which is the national sport of Bhutan.
  • Estonia sent a “Trio to Rio.” That’s the slogan for Liina, Lily, and Leila Luik—identical triplets from Eastern Europe who are all competing in the women’s marathon. It’s the first time in Olympic history that triplets will compete against each other in the same event.
  • In the Opening Ceremonies, the flag bearer for Iran was archer Zahra Nemati. She holds a black belt in taekwondo, but was in a severe car accident in 2003 that left her paralyzed in both legs, preventing her from practicing martial arts. In 2006, she took up archery and got so good so fast that within six months she finished third in Iran’s national championship. In 2012, she won a gold medal in the Paralympics, and this year she’s competing at both the Paralympics and the Olympics.
