It’s America’s favorite sandwich cookie, and it’s stayed the same for decades. Recently, however, Oreos seem to have gone a little mad.

OREOOPS

To generate press and differentiate itself over its competition, Nabisco has rolled out dozens of new Oreo flavors over the past couple of years, from Caramel Apple to Candy Corn to Swedish Fish to Watermelon to Banana Split. In 2017, Oreo released a special batch for Easter in which the creme filling was made from Peeps — the brightly-colored marshmallow Easter basket staple. The creme was dyed a seasonally-appropriate pastel pink. Sure, they looked appetizing and tasted great, but that pink creme had some unexpected effects — news outlets reported that many people thought something was very wrong when their tongues and poop turned pink.

OREO?

Following all those nutty flavors, Oreo launched possibly the weirdest one of all in 2017: Mystery Oreo. The package offers no hints as to what the flavor profile might be. Instead, Oreo fans have to guess. If somebody nails it, they can win $50,000. Those who’ve tried it say, it has a distinct citrus flavor, with hints of sugary breakfast cereal.

Have you ever eaten just one Oreo? Probably not — and there’s a good reason for that. In 2013, a study at Connecticut College found that Oreos are as addictive as cocaine. Lab rats were fed a diet high in sugar and fat and found that certain sugar-and-fat-loaded foods — specifically Oreos — stimulated the rats’ pleasure centers more so than morphine and cocaine.

Oreo’s corporate bosses are trying to increase the cookie’s popularity in China, and hired a Hong Kong advertising agency called Dimensions to help them out. The agency came up with Oreo Vinyl. The specially-made cookies are embedded with grooves. The grooves hold music, which can be played on a special, tiny record player. Four different songs are available in the packs of Oreo Vinyl: an Oreo jingle performed in jazz, classical, electronic, and traditional Chinese styles.
