Far Too Quiet on the Set: Deaths During Movie Production

August 22, 2024

By Brian Boone

In the midst of the bright and happy summer blockbuster movie season, let’s take a look into a darker corner of the history of flickering light — these are the sad stories of people who died as the result of accidents and disasters while trying to make a movie.

TYRONE POWER

Matinee idol Tyrone Power specialized in swashbuckling action-adventure movies, like Blood and Sand and The Mark of Zorro. Solomon and Sheba shot on location in Spain, and one scene required an elaborately choreographed sword fight between Power and co-star George Sanders. After shooting eight takes of the grueling, demanding scene, Power told the crew he felt suddenly cold and hurt all over, and then he started to shake uncontrollably. An ambulance was summoned to take the actor to a hospital, but he died on the way. Power succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 44.

VIC MORROW

Best known for the long-running ‘60s war series Combat!tough-guy actor Vic Morrow was well cast as a Vietnam War veteran in a segment for the 1983 anthology film Twilight Zone: The MovieMorrow played a racist stuck in a series of horrifying nightmares to teach him the error of his ways, including a sequence in the Vietnam War where he’s tasked with protecting two small Vietnamese children during an American bombing raid. The script called for Morrow to carry the kids across a swamp as a low-flying chopper dropped pyrotechnics made up to look like bombs. “I’ve got to be crazy to do this shot. I should’ve asked for a double,” Morrow was overheard saying before the cameras rolled. During filming, the pyrotechnics exploded incorrectly, causing the stunt helicopter pilot to lose control. He hit and killed child actor Renee Chen before the craft tipped over. The chopper blade instantly killed child actor Myca Dinh Lee and Morrow, too.

MARTHA MANSFIELD

Musical theater star Martha Mansfield transitioned into silent film as a teenager in the 1910s and in just seven years, starred in more than 30 movies. On Thanksgiving 1923, Mansfield filmed her final scene for the Civil War romance The Warrens of Virginiaand hung around on set, sitting in a car with some other movie personnel. One of those friends lit a match, and the flame quickly connected with Mansfield’s billowy costume. Co-star Wilfred Lytell attempted to snuff out the flames with his overcoat, but it didn’t put it out entirely and Mansfield had already suffered severe burns over much of her body. She was pronounced dead at a hospital at the age of 23

ROY KINNEAR

Character actor Roy Kinnear made a lot of movies — he had supporting roles in 160 movies, filmed over the span of 30 years. He’s probably best known as lackey Planchet in 1973’s epic hit version of The Three Musketeers. He returned to the franchise in 1988 to film the sequel The Return of the MusketeersWhile filming a horseback scene outside Toledo, Spain, Kinnear took a violent fall off of his animal. Rushed to a Madrid hospital, Kinnear was immediately treated for a broken pelvis, but the next day his injuries triggered a heart attack. It was fatal; Kinnear was 54.
