5 More Weird June Holidays You Ought to Celebrate

June 18, 2015

Here are some more odd celebrations to hold you over until the 4th of July.

June 20: National Hollerin’ Contest Day

Since this holiday began in Spivey’s Corner, North Carolina (population: 50), thousands of people arrive each year for the National Hollerin’ Contest. How do you holler? You just do—real loud.

June 21: Go Skate Day

This holiday was registered by the International Association of Skateboard Companies, a trade industry devoted to getting more people interested in skateboarding. This would be the day to take it up. (But remember: this is for skateboarding. No roller skating or inline skating allowed!)

June 24: Swim a Lap Day

Creators of this holiday want to let everyone know how fun and healthy it is to go swimming. So, find a pool, find a swimsuit, and swim a lap. (You can swim a few more if you like.)

June 25: National Catfish Day

In the 1980s, a group of catfish farmers got together to make this a holiday. The ultimate aim was to get people all over the country to try catfish, which is largely a regional delicacy popular in the South. Unlike a lot of these silly holidays, this one is a real, official holiday. In 1987, President Reagan signed a presidential proclamation creating National Catfish Day.

June 28: Insurance Awareness Day

Are you aware of insurance, and how it’s a good thing? Great, then you don’t need to celebrate Insurance Awareness Day. (It was registered by an insurance industry trade group.) However, it is a good time to take stock of your insurance policies and see if they are up to date with your needs.
