Paper Coffee Cups

1

More than half of all American adults—54 percent of those over 18—drink at least one cup of coffee every day. An additional 17 percent of Americans say that they drink coffee not quite daily, but at least once a week. And another 7 percent drink it “occasionally.” That works out to 78 percent of the adult population.

2

That means about 100 million Americans drink coffee every day. But what are they drinking? 70 million drink good old fashioned drip coffee, while 30 million prefer fancy specialty espresso drinks like lattes or mochas.

3

But how much is that? Those who drink coffee usually don’t have just one, or even two cups. The average coffee drinker imbibes 3.1 cups a day, and the average cup size is 9 ounces.

4

Americans in their 20s drink an average of 1.8 cups a day. Americans in their 50s drink an average of 2.4 cups a day.

5

Morning Joe? Not necessarily so. Two-thirds of Americans drink coffee at breakfast (or instead of breakfast), while 30 percent drink it between meals. About 5 percent drink coffee solely with lunch or dinner.

6

All told, Americans spend $40 billion a year on coffee. Per capita, that works out to about $165 per coffee drinker.

7

But we all have our limits. While millions find three or four bucks an acceptable price to pay for a latte or a cappuccino, studies show that the average coffee drinker says that $3.67 is the absolute highest price they would pay for a plain black coffee.

8

But Americans are not nearly the biggest coffee drinkers. The U.S. is #8 on the list of coffee-swilling nations. Top of the list: Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, and France.

9

The U.S. consumes about the same amount of coffee as does Brazil, where a lot of the world’s coffee is grown. The largest single contributor to the world’s supply, Brazil produces a third of the world’s coffee beans.
