June is a magical month full of early summer fun like beaches, barbecues…and hugging cats.
June 2: National Rocky Road Day
Ice cream used to be just that. It consisted of little more than cream, sugar, and a flavoring agent like vanilla or chocolate to produce a smooth concoction. Rocky Road was among the first ice creams to have chunks of stuff in it, in this case nuts and marshmallows. It was invented in early 1929 but named and released months later—creators William Dreyer and Joseph Edy thought the whimsical name (and the ice cream itself) would cheer people up after that year’s historic stock market crash.
June 3: Repeat Day
The aim of this day is to find something you love…and keep doing it. Whatever it is—reading, watching movies, eating blueberries—just make sure you do it again. (We like to write blog entries, so…the aim of this day is to find something you love…and keep doing it. Whatever it is—reading, watching movies, eating blueberries—just make sure you do it again.)
June 4: Hug Your Cat Day
Because a “Cat Appreciation Day” sounds awfully dry and not celebratory enough of the family pet, there’s this day devoted to giving your cat some affection. Of course, cats are notoriously inconsistent, so if you do actually give Fluffy a hug…be careful that you don’t get scratched. (And if you don’t have a cat but really want to hug one, well, June also happens to be “Adopt a Cat Month.”)
June 17: World Juggling Day
Juggling is hard, and people who can do it professionally, or juggle something other than balls are frankly quite impressive. Today is the day to show appreciation for them by watching some juggling videos on YouTube, or digging out that “Learn to Juggle” kit somebody gave you as a gag gift years ago. (Note: start with balls, and work your way up to bowling pins or swords.)
June 23: National Pink Day
While it’s often seen as a “feminine” color, there’s nothing wrong with guys wearing pink. Hey, those Miami Vice guys in the ‘80s wore pastels and they were cool. Rapper Kanye West has said pink was his favorite color. So no matter your gender, wear that pleasant red-meets-white shirt or shoes today with pride.
